December Report - South Florida
December 18, 2014

Hello everyone, here is the the fishing report for December 2014. So far, this month has brought some really good trout fishing in the backcountry. My last on the water I fished with a buddy and we caught 15 sea trout in two hours along with ladyfish, jacks, mangrove snapper, and mackerel. Trout fishing is usually the main theme this time of year for any family fishing trip. Our average size Sea trout here in the lower keys is 15 to 20 inches with some reaching up to 28 inches in length.
Just Recently I had a really good day on the Bonefish. Had 6 shots and landed two fish in the 8 to 9 lb range which is great this time of year but possibly overlooked by a lot of people this time of year. Along with that I caught a 24" snook on a live pilchard. Snook are not too common in the Lower Florida Keys but they are making a great comeback! These kind of things make great oppuirtunities when you get warmer days in the winter and the tides favor the right flat or channel here in the keys.
This month brings Barracuda on the flats. These fish can be targeted with light tackle, spinning rods or throwing anywhere from an 8 to 10 wt fly rod. Some may think of Barracudas as intimidating because of their canine teeth or annoying when they still their prize snapper right off their line. But they are truly a fun fish to catch. Folks from places like Minnesota or Michigan "even Canada" like to fish for Barracudas here in the Lower Florida Keys because they have muskies and northern pike who are similar in fighting action. I highly recommend coming down to the Lower Florida Keys to experience this explosive action, hard fighting, drag screaming action with barracudas on the flats!
This is the last report of 2014. This year has been great with lots of tarpon, bonefish, permit, redish, and even snook as well here in the lower fl keys. Along with that having three grand slams " One being a backcountry slam and the other two were the big three grandslam". Looking ahead in 2015, I hope to exceed what I had accomplished in 2014. Hope everyone has happy and safe holiday!
